Restaurants in San Giovanni/San Lorenzo

Arancia Blu

Veggies, veggies, veggies...

Strictly vegetarian (run by Fabio Bassan and Enrico Bartolucci), with wine bottles as décor. Hardly original, but the food is. Two examples: Tortino di carciofi, patate e menta con salsa di pecorino — a kind of artichoke mint cake; ravioli ripieni di ricotta di bufala, parmigiano e scorza di limone conditi con zucca e salvia — ravioli with ricotta, parmesan, and bufala that tastes of sage. Yum. Indoor and outdoor seating. Reservations a must. — Cristina Polli

Da Franco ar Vicoletto

Inexpensive seafood.

A real neighborhood trattoria in one of Rome’s most up and coming neighborhoods, San Lorenzo. You can smell the fresh fish a block away. Franco and his Irish wife Laura always find the time to chat with you as they manage this bustling place. Serves a wide variety of fish — fried, baked, grilled — at absurdly low prices Creative first courses, including shellfish and beans! Lots of students, locals, and diners in the know. You can make a meal for under €20. — Kristine Crane

Girarrosto Toscano

Steak heaven.

Lovely, grand restaurant with a famous antipasto of zucchine flowers, stuffed, deep-fried olives and such, but known especially for its bistecca alla fiorentina, a large porterhouse for two or three, grilled to perfection. A good restaurant for entertaining clients or for groups. Traditional, bustling Rome ambience. — Suzanne Dunaway

La Tana dei Golosi

Tana dei Golosi near San Giovanni.

This low-key eatery (and enoteca) has a highly original menu that puts a spin on traditional regional dishes and alternates the region each couple of months. The recent tagliatelle noce e aglio — nuts and garlic — was a winner. Also the leafy-thick pappardelle in Barolo wine sauce. Other favorites: gnocchetti alla Campidanese (with sausage, tomato, pecorino, onions and saffron); fettuccine Maremmane (with tomato, olives, and capers); baccalá in Guazzetto (salt cod with grapes); bistecca brasata (chianina beef with onion and speck).

The staff is extremely knowledgeable and puts a strong emphasis on fresh organic ingredients in the kitchen. The result is honest food at fair prices. They also do catering and weddings, as well as "theme nights" — a recent one had foods associated only with chocolate (example: tagliolini al cioccolato, mascarpone e mandorle). — Cristina Polli

Sotto Sopra

'Nduia sausage pizza.

Outstanding pizza in San Lorenzo. Just don't wear wool: You'll suffocate. A mixed plate of bruschette is good for starters. If you enjoy spicy food, then order the 'nduia (spicy sausage from Calabria) pizza. If you're lucky, you may hear live music, as traveling musicians hop from restaurant to restaurant in this area. Reservations recommended. — Nicole Arriaga*
