I Templari

STOP! It's dinner-time...

Said to be named after the Knights Templar — who passed through here about 800 years ago — this popular pizzeria is decorated to suit the story, with cavaliers’ capes and ancient weapons hanging on the walls. Well-known for its over-sized Roman-style pizzas, the eclectic mix of antipasti is also worth some sampling. It includes spiced beans, grilled vegetables, salami, tiny mozzarella balls and plenty of salad with black olives. Served with beer and good local wine and even sparkling Romanella. — Kristine Crane

La Macina

Vetralla in the hills.

Max and Anna (a brother/sister team) earned their stripes running a cantina at Vetralla’s annual "Cene in Cantine" festival. Now they dispense local specialities in a country setting, perfect for a leisurely Sunday, out-of-Rome lunch surrounded by olive trees. Fettuccine, lombrichi, grilled meats, locally grown vegetables, bruschette dripping with green olive oil are all accompanied by gusty red wine. Pizza in the evening. In Localitá Valle Calandrella, Cura di Vetralla, near Viterbo. — David Amory

La Pineta da Mozzone

Relief from urban chaos...

A perfect getaway from bustling Rome, the restaurant overlooks the capital from its perch above the horse stables in the town of Formello. Everyone in town gathers here for pizza and Sunday lunch. Always expect a lively and multi-generational crowd. A variety of pizzas, abundant portions of grilled vegetables as an antipasto (very unsalted), and excellent cuts of beef and veal. — Kristine Crane

Risotto al radicchio.

If you happen to be traveling along the Via Appia about an hour outside of Rome, don’t miss this tasteful combination of Latium and Venetian cuisine. You can’t go wrong with the fish: Try the zuppa di pesce, risotto al radicchio and involtini di calamari. — Kristine Crane

Just around the corner...

A medieval house in Formello where you’ll be treated to family-style ambience and service (including the town dog, Bello, who also mills around). Owner Antonietta prides herself on the wide selection of antipasti: vegetables, sausage, little pizzas and fried finger foods; vegetable-based first courses, and homemade desserts. Vinoteca San Marco

A called-for wine pause.

Nestled in the hills above Rome, near Frascati (drive out on the Tuscolana). Try the rigatoni al nero di seppia con calamaretti e zucchine. As a main course, the filet of soasi with leek and zucchine is delicate without being boring. Wines are hit and miss. However, a pleasant surprise for bubble seekers: their surprisingly good Spumante Frascati Doc Superiore carried some of us happily through dinner. Winery tours available. Group events by reservation. Lunch served Tuesday-Friday; dinner Thursday-Saturday. — Kristine Crane
