Restaurants in Palena (Chieti)

Casa Dell’Orso

Mountain eating.

Begin with superb zuppa di ceci e porcini (chickpea and porcini mushroom soup with homemade wide noodles, €7) with delicate fresh herbs. Or chitarrina ai funghi porcini (fresh pasta with porcini mushrooms, €8). Pork steak was grilled to perfection. Truffles, too. This wing of a converted monastery is airy, yellow and has a late 18th-century fresco of the Last Supper in the dining room. Outside are the rounded mountains in National Park della Majella. Serves lunch and dinner. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the local red wine, several options here. — Judy Edelhoff

Park Hotel Majella

Hardly a boar...

During the winter meals are served only on weekends, lunch and dinner. The owner is a hunter, so game enthusiasts can enjoy wild boar, hare, or whatever he’s bagged. Decor is 1980s simple, but the splendid mountain view is especially evident at lunchtime. Open Friday through Sunday (closed weekdays) in winter. — Judy Edelhoff

Ristorante Pizzeria La Pineta

Mixed salumi.

Mariano Como runs a reliably good (hotel) restaurant. Start with the plate of local cheeses and salamis, including an excellent hard-to-find pork liver salami. Ravioli and gnocchi were both good and homemade. Grilled meats were excellent, especially lamb, sausage, pork. Try "poor cake" for dessert, a spongy cake layered with cream and liqueur. Small fireplace along one wall in dining room or have after-dinner drinks by the larger fireplace in the lobby. Pizza available. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo red wine — Rocca Antica Poggiofiorito 2003 is good value. — Judy Edelhoff
